Title: Early Sunday Morning: The Pearl Harbor Diary of Amber Billows
Author: Barry Denenberg
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.

Publication Date: 2002
Genre: Historical Fiction
Audience: 4th grade- young adult
Overview: Amber Billows, a twelve year old american girl, moves to Hawaii with her family in 1941. This story is from the Dear America series, which features young character's re-telling their experiences in history through their diaries. In this case, Amber shares her thoughts and experiences of the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. This book also includes photos and facts about the time era and attack in the back of the book.
Activity: I think this would be a great book to use during a history or social studies lesson teaching about the attack on Pearl Harbor. I think the children would find this book interesting because the story is in the form of a diary, and told by a character similiar to their age, which gives them the oppurtunity to relate and personalize. Another activity could be letting the students create their own diary or diary page on a significant event in their own life. They could also create a character and diary page on another event in history, including facts, dates, people, etc.
