Bullies Never Win

Title: Bullies Never Win
Author: Margery Cuyler
Illustrator: Arthur Howard
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers: http://kids.simonandschuster.com/
Publication Date: 2009
Genre: Picture Book
Audience: Grades PreK-2
Overview: This story is about a young girl who is being bullied by one of her class mates. Her life begins to revolve around worrying what the bully will do next. Her family sees this change in her and wastes no time giving her advice about how to handle the situation. In the end, she stands up to the bully with a clever line, and solves the problem once and for all. This story has a great message, and great illustrations!
Activity: The main character in this story eventually stands up to the bully with the phrase, "Toothpicks may be thin, but bullies never win". A useful activity for this book would be to read the book aloud to the class and have them come up with catchy phrases that could be used to stand up to a bully. The phrases could be on sentence strips posted throughout the classroom or in one central area. This could be done to go along with a school theme of bully prevention, or random acts of kindness week, or just to deal with a bullying problem.
