The Very Ugly Bug

Title: The Very Ugly Bug
Author: Liz Pichon
Illustrator: Liz Pichon
Publisher: Tiger Tales http://www.tigertalesbooks.com/
Publication Date: 2004
Genre: Picture Book & Science and Nature
Audience: Gr. K- 2
Overview: This book is about a very ugly bug who constantly wondered why the other bugs didn't look like her. She asks the bugs why their specific body parts (i.e. eyes, wings etc) are not like hers. Each bug explains why they look the way they do and how it helps them camoflauge and stay safe from birds. The very ugly bug decides to make a disguise to help her fit in but it only made her stand out more! From afar, a bird saw her and thought she looked delicious so the bug shook off her disguise and scared the bird away. It gave her confidence and even attracted Mr. Ugly Bug. They fell in love and had a family of baby ugly bugs.
Activity: One activity could be to have each student think about their favorite quality or personality trait about themselves. They could draw a picture representing it and we could make a class quilt. Another activity could be more science based and talk about how bugs camoflauge and protect themselves.
