Middle School is Worse Than Meatloaf

Title: Middle School Is Worse Than Meatloaf: A Year Told Through Stuff
Author: Jennifer L. Holm
Illustrator: Elicia Castaldi
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Publication Date: 2007
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Audience: Gr. 6-8
Overview: This book shares it's story in a very interesting way. Using ideas almost like a scrapbook, old receipts, bank statements, newspaper clippings, sample work from class, and horoscopes are used to tell the story of a young girl struggling to reach everything on her 'to-do' list during the seventh grade. Ginny's family life, academic work, and friendships are highlighted throughout the book as she struggles with everyday situations. Interactions are often shown through notes in class, post-its on the refrigerator of her home, and cards from her grandfather in Florida.
Activity: To get students involved with this book, we could try doing a project where students put together different keepsakes from different parts of their life (school, sports, clubs) to make a scrapbook page similar to Ginny's book. This would be an interesting activity at the beginning of the year to get to know students and what they see as being important parts of their life.
