One Green Apple

Title: One Green Apple
Author: Eve Bunting

Illustrator: Ted Lewin

Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Publication Date: 2006

Genre: Multicultural, Picture Book

Audience: PreK-2

Overview: One Green Apple is the story of a young immigrant named Farah and her school field trip to an apple orchard. Farah feels alone and discouraged being the new kid in school, being from a different country and therefore, not knowing the language that those among her speak. On her trip to the orchard classmates begin to introduce themselves to her, and she also starts to notice small things that sound similar and do not seem so different from home. After all of the students have seemed to pick a red apple, Farah brings over a green apple to add to the machine to make apple cider. She gains self-confidence and begins to feel like she belongs when she realizes that although her apple was unique and looked different from the others, it went perfectly with the other apples and added something special to the cider.

Activity: I thought that this book would be great to use as an introduction to a multicultural lesson that addresses how every individual is unique and special in their own way. I would use this book as a possible hook into the lesson. One possible lesson would be to come up with a list of ten interview questions as a class to find out about others. After coming up with these questions, each student could interview another student in the class. Once finding out about another student, each pair could share a few things about the student they interviewed that makes them different and special.
