The Story of May

Title: The Story of May
Author and Illustrator: Mordicai Gerstein
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers (http://www.harpercollins.com/)
Publication Date: 1993
Genre: Picture Book
Audience: Grades PreK-2
Overview: The Story of May is about the young month of May. The months of the year are represented by people in this story. April, May's mother, wakes her to teach her how to prepare her month. May wanders a bit to far and finds her Aunt June, who tells May that she has a father who lives on the other side of the year. May begins a journey to all of the months, or her relatives, to find her father, December. This story gives a clever description for each month of the year, as well as the reason for why May weather may sometimes visit in January.
Activity: This book would very appropriate to read on a day that is especially warm when it is supposed to be cold, or especially cold when it should be getting warm. It gives a very clever explanation for weather that is uncharacteristic of a certain season. After a read aloud of the book, students can simply describe a memory that they have of a peculiar day of weather and draw a picture.
